Mariners Lineup: J.P. Crawford at 3B; Naylor, Arozarena day-to-day

Update: The Seattle Mariners placed outfielder Randy Arozarena on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain prior to the start of Tuesday’s game.

The AL West-leading Seattle Mariners have two big returns in their lineup Tuesday, but it still looks far from normal.

The biggest reason for that: J.P. Crawford isn’t returning to his usual position.

Mariners’ rotation going back to piggyback – with a twist

For the first time in his long Mariners career, Crawford is set to play third base in Tuesday’s 6:40 p.m. series opener against the Baltimore Orioles. He has previously played all 908 of his games in the field for the Mariners at shortstop, but he played 26 games at third base over his first two MLB seasons with Philadelphia.

Crawford offered to move to third from shortstop in May upon the arrival of top prospect Colt Emerson to the big leagues. Emerson has played third base when Crawford has been healthy, but also has seen plenty of action at short recently in Crawford’s absence.

Emerson is playing shortstop and hitting eighth in the batting order Tuesday.

Crawford is returning to action after a stint on the 10-day injured list for a right hand contusion he suffered when he was hit by a pitch on June 5 in Detroit. Also activated from the 10-day IL Tuesday was star catcher Cal Raleigh, who hit five home runs on a seven-game rehab assignment in the minor leagues last week while rehabbing an oblique strain.

One thing that looks normal is the top of the batting order. Crawford is leading off and Raleigh is hitting second, followed by three-time All-Star center fielder Julio Rodríguez.

But that’s where things take a left turn, as left fielder Randy Arozarena and first baseman Josh Naylor remain out of action after leaving games last week due to injury. Right fielder Luke Raley is also out with back tightness he experienced Tuesday afternoon, according to Adam Jude of The Seattle Times.

Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said both Arozarena, who left Friday’s game and sat the rest of the weekend with a hamstring issue, and Naylor, who left Sunday’s game with a shin concern, are day-to-day. Hollander was optimistic they could return soon.

Hollander said Naylor’s shin is actually fine, but that he’s also bothered by a wrist injury. As for Arozarena, he was undergoing an MRI Tuesday just to make sure his injury was not more severe than the team believed.

“Great likelihood is that he’s back tomorrow and available off the bench today possibly,” Hollander said about Arozarena.

With both Naylor and Arozarena out Tuesday, Dominic Canzone moves up to the cleanup spot. Victor Robles will play left field while Miles Mastrobuoni is at first.
