Seattle Mariners call up top prospect Harry Ford, release Solano

The long awaited MLB debut for Seattle Mariners prospect Harry Ford is imminent, with the M’s calling up Ford from Triple-A Tacoma as rosters expand for September.

The Mariners announced several moves Monday morning, with the addition of Ford and release of veteran first baseman Donovan Solano the most notable.

Here are each of the roster moves Seattle made:

• C Harry Ford selected from Triple-A Tacoma.
• RHP Luke Jackson selected from Tacoma.
• IF Leo Rivas recalled from Tacoma.

• RHP Sauryn Lao designated for assignment.
• IF Donovan Solano released from roster.

While active rosters expanded from 26 to 28 players on Monday, the Mariners only have 27 due to the seven-game suspension currently being served by outfielder Victor Robles. He can return Saturday in the second game of a three-game series at Atlanta.

The 22-year-old Ford is the No. 40 overall prospect and No. 4 Mariners prospect as ranked by MLB.com. He is also ranked in the top 100 overall by ESPN (No. 65), Fangraphs (No. 67), Baseball America (No. 76) and The Athletic (No. 79).

Ford, a righty-hitting Georgia native who was No. 12 pick in the 2021 MLB Draft by Seattle, has a .283/.408/.460 slash line for an .868 OPS in 97 games in Triple-A this year. He hit 16 home runs, 18 doubles, seven stolen bases, 68 runs and 74 RBIs for the Rainiers, with 74 walks to 88 strikeouts. He ranks third in the Pacific Coast League in on-base, fifth in walks, tied for eighth in RBIs, 11th in OPS, 16th in runs, and tied for 16th in homers.

At 5 foot 10 and 200 pounds, Ford has exceptional athleticism for a catcher. He also has turned heads on the national stage, becoming the first player to hit two home runs in World Baseball Classic play before their 21st birthday, which he did while playing for Great Britain in the 2023 WBC. Ford was born in Atlanta to British parents.

Ford becomes the fifth first-round pick from consecutive drafts on the Mariners’ active roster, joining right-handers Logan Gilbert (2018), George Kirby (2019) and Emerson Hancock (2020), and infielder Cole Young (2022).

The addition of Ford gives the Mariners three catchers on their active roster, which could come in handy due to the workload Cal Raleigh has had in his star-making year that’s seen him break multiple records and become the first backstop with 50 homers in a single season.

The switch-hitting Rivas, 27, played 30 games for Seattle earlier this year, hitting .283 (17 for 60) with a .411 on-base mark. In 66 Triple-A games this year, he is hitting .318 with 10 home runs, 46 RBIs, 24 steals and a .978 OPS.

The 34-year-old Jackson is a 10-year MLB veteran who last pitched in the majors this season with the Texas Rangers. He signed a minor league contract with the Mariners on Aug. 21 and allowed two earned runs with four strikeouts and no walks over 2 1/2 innings with Tacoma. He has a career 4.27 ERA with 28 saves in MLB play.

Solano, 37, hit .252 with three homers and 21 RBIs in 69 games for Seattle this season. A 12-year MLB veteran, Solano began the season in a platoon at first base but saw his playing time cut down following Seattle’s July trade with Arizona for first baseman Josh Naylor.

Lao, 26, has appeared in two games for the Mariners this season. In 22 games in Triple-A this season, he made 19 starts and logged a 3.13 record with 73 strikeouts to 19 walks over 69 innings.

The Mariners (73-60) enter September with a lead of 2.5 games over Texas for the American League’s third and final wild card. Seattle is also two games back of Houston for the lead in the AL West.

The M’s are set to begin a three-game series at the Tampa Bay Rays at 4:35 p.m. Monday. Radio coverage on Seattle Sports will begin at 3:30 with the pregame show.
