Mariners’ Cal Raleigh slugs 2 HRs in 1st rehab game with Tacoma

Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh began the second stop of his rehab assignment with a bang on Tuesday. Then he followed it up with an even bigger one soon after.

Mariners’ depth could mean a different kind of trade deadline

In his first at-bat since joining the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers, Raleigh launched the first pitch he saw from Albuquerque right-hander (and former Mariner) Erasmo Ramírez over the wall in right field for a two-run home run and 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma.

Raleigh’s blast traveled 326 feet and came off the bat at 104 mph.

Then with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Raleigh got a pitch in his wheelhouse near the bottom of the zone and yanked another homer to right field for a grand slam off right-hander Victor Juarez to put Tacoma up 12-2.

Raleigh’s second homer of the day traveled 357 feet and left the bat with a 95.1-mph exit velocity.

Raleigh, who was placed on the 10-day injured list May 14 with a right oblique strain, was making his second rehab appearance and his first at catcher on Tuesday. He played for the High-A Everett AquaSox and was their designated hitter on Sunday, going 1 for 3 at the plate with a single.

The plan for Raleigh is to remain with Tacoma this week, and the Mariners will reassess the status of their slugging catcher afterwards.

Before landing on the IL, Raleigh was off to a slow start at the plate, batting .161 with a .560 OPS and seven homers through 41 games. He was the American League MVP runner-up last season following a 60-homer campaign that set major league records for most homers in a season by a catcher and a switch-hitter.
