Roster Move: Mariners call up reliever with sub-1.00 ERA

Jun 28, 2025, 12:21 PM

The Seattle Mariners promoted right-handed reliever Juan Burgos from Triple-A Tacoma ahead of Saturday’s game against the Texas Rangers.

In a corresponding move, Seattle designated right-handed reliever Zach Pop for assignment.

Burgos, 25, has allowed just two earned runs all season, posting a 0.62 ERA in 29 innings over 22 combined appearances with Double-A Arkansas and Triple-A Tacoma. He has a 0.59 WHIP, with 30 strikeouts and just seven walks.

Burgos’ first 21 appearances this season came with Arkansas. He then tossed a scoreless inning with Tacoma on Tuesday night before earning his first MLB call-up on Saturday.

A Dominican Republic native, Burgos signed with the Mariners as an international free agent in 2019. Over six minor league seasons in Seattle’s organization, he posted a 2.81 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 246 strikeouts and 104 walks over 224 1/3 innings.

Pop, 28, signed a minor league deal with the Mariners in mid-April after being released by the Toronto Blue Jays earlier that month. His release came after dealing with elbow discomfort in spring training.

Pop was called up to the Mariners on June 13 and made four relief appearances for Seattle, allowing eight earned runs and 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings. He surrendered seven earned runs in one inning of relief during Thursday’s 10-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins.
