Highly touted Seattle Mariners prospect Lazaro Montes is known for his prodigious raw power.
But even for him, this was jaw-dropping.
Hype Train: Is Cal Raleigh the 1st-half AL MVP?
In just his fourth game since being promoted to Double-A Arkansas, the lefty-hitting Montes launched a towering 475-foot moonshot home run on Friday night during the Travelers’ wild 17-15 loss to Amarillo. Montes’ monstrous blast soared deep into the Texas sky and landed on a walkway well beyond the center-field fence at Amarillo’s Hodgetown ballpark.
It was Montes’ 20th home run of the season, which is tied for the most in the entire minor leagues.
For context, there have been just two homers at the MLB level this season that have traveled farther than Montes’ tape-measure shot – a 484-footer from Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout and a 479-footer from Minnesota Twins slugger Byron Buxton. The longest minor league homer recorded by Statcast this season belongs to MLB Pipeline No. 1 overall prospect Roman Anthony, who hit a 497-foot grand slam at Triple-A just two days before he made his MLB debut with the Boston Red Sox.
The 6-foot-5 Montes also uncorked a a 435-foot home run to right-center field on Wednesday night in just his second game at the Double-A level. Over his first four games with Arkansas, he’s batting 3 for 16 with two homers and a double.
Montes, a 20-year-old outfielder from Cuba, is ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 31 overall prospect and Baseball America’s No. 52 overall prospect.
Montes was promoted on Tuesday from High-A Everett, where he slashed .268/.387/.572 with 18 home runs, five triples, 12 doubles and a .959 OPS in 67 games this season. At the time of his promotion, he led the Northwest League in homers, slugging percentage and OPS, while ranking third in walks and tied for fifth in hits. Montes also had the ninth-best walk rate in the Northwest League at 15.9%, but also had the 10th-highest strikeout rate at 27.6%.
Over four minor league seasons, Montes is hitting .285/.407/.538 with 64 homers and a .945 OPS in 314 career games.
