Seattle Mariners promoting 2 prospects ranked in MLB’s top 100

Two of the top Seattle Mariners prospects are moving up in the minor leagues.

Both outfielder Lazaro Montes and infielder Michael Arroyo are on their way up from the High-A Everett AquaSox to the Double-A Arkansas Travelers, the Mariners announced Monday afternoon.

Montes is ranked No. 32 overall and No. 2 among Mariners prospects by MLB Pipeline, while Arroyo is No. 77 overall and seventh in the M’s organization. Seattle’s nine prospects in the MLB top 100 rankings leads all of baseball.

In 67 games with Everett this season, the 6-foot-5 Montes has slashed .268/.387/.572 for a .959 OPS with 18 home runs, 12 doubles, five triples, 50 RBIs and 48 walks to 83 strikeouts. The 20-year-old native of Cuba leads the Northwest League in homers, RBIs, slugging and OPS, is tied for the lead in triples, is third in walks, is tied for fifth in hits (67), and is sixth in runs (43).

Arroyo, a 20 year old from Colombia, owns a .269/.422/.512 slash for a .934 OPS in 65 games with the AquaSox. He’s second in the Northwest League behind only Montes in homers (15) and OPS, is third in slugging and on-base percentage, is tied for seventh in RBIs (39), is tied for eighth in doubles (14) and hits (65), and is tied for ninth in runs (41).

The 5-foot-10 Arroyo has played second base, third base and shortstop as a professional, but has strictly played second with the AquaSox this season. Montes has been Everett’s primary right fielder.

Even with the losses of Montes and Arroyo, the Everett roster still features three other M’s prospects ranked in the top 100 overall by MLB: shortstop Colt Emerson (No. 16), outfielder Jonny Farmelo (No. 76), and switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje (No. 86).

South of Seattle in Triple-A, the Tacoma Rainiers feature No. 61 overall and No. 5 M’s prospect Harry Ford, a catcher.

Montes and Arroyo will become the only top 100-ranked M’s prospects in Double-A.

Seattle announced five other promotions in the minors Monday:

• RHP Charlie Beilenson from Everett to Arkansas
• RHP Marcelo Perez from Everett to Arkansas
• RHP Juan Burgos from Arkansas to Tacoma
• LHP Brandyn Garcia from Arkansas to Tacoma
