Cal Raleigh got it started early and the ball kept leaving the ballpark when the Seattle Mariners came to bat.
The Mariners clubbed five home runs in another slugfest at Wrigley Field en route to a series-clinching 14-6 win over the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs. The 14 runs tied a season best for Seattle.
Seattle Mariners 14, Chicago Cubs 6: Box Score
Raleigh kicked it off with his MLB-leading 31st home run of the season in the first inning. The switch-hitting slugger connected on the first pitch he saw from Cubs right-hander Colin Rea, mashing a fastball 440 feet to right-center field with a 105 mph exit velocity to go up 2-0.
The home run was Raleigh’s fourth of the series and fifth in past five games. It brought his RBI total up to 66, which is just one shy of ex-Mariner Eugenio Suárez for the MLB lead.
After the Cubs answered back with a Seiya Suzuki solo home run in the bottom of the first, Dominic Canzone went deep for a solo shot with two outs in the second for a 3-1 advantage.
Canzone sent a 1-0 fastball from Rea 394 feet into the seats in left-center field.
Red-hot veteran Donovan Solano added on with a solo shot in the fourth inning, his second home run of the season.
Solano, who entered the game batting .429 with a 205 wRC+ in 13 contests since May 24, pulled a sweeper on the inner-third of the plate 391 feet with a 102.9 exit velocity for a 4-1 lead.
Canzone added another solo home run off Rea in the fifth inning for his first career game with two home runs.
Canzone’s third home run of the season came off a slider on the inside corner that he pulled for a towering, 397-foot home run that left the bat at 106.3 mph. It gave Seattle a 6-4 lead.
Solano wouldn’t be outdone by Canzone. The first baseman added on another home run in the seventh, this time a two-run blast to put the Mariners ahead 9-4.
Solano unloaded on a hanging 1-2 curveball from former Mariner Chris Flexen for a 416-foot shot into the stands in left field. It marked Solano’s first two-homer game since June 12 of last year and just the fourth in 960 career MLB games.
Canzone and Solano were the second pair of Mariners to have multi-homer outings during the series. Raleigh and Mitch Garver did so on Friday. It’s the first time in franchise history the Mariners have had two players have multi-homer games in two separate games in a single series, per the Mariners.
The power surge helped starter Logan Gilbert earn his first win since returning from the injured list. Gilbert, who was making his second start back, allowed four runs and eight hits and struck out six over five innings.
