Mariners recall RHP Kowar, option rookie to minors

The Seattle Mariners recalled right-handed reliever Jackson Kowar from Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday.

Seattle optioned rookie left-hander Brandyn Garcia to the Rainiers in a corresponding move.

Kowar, a first-round pick by the Royals in 2018, posted a 1-0 record and 2.08 ERA with two runs allowed and eight strikeouts over 8 2/3 innings in seven appearances with the Mariners earlier this season. The 28 year old is making his return to the big leagues after being optioned to Tacoma on June 16.

In 10 appearances with the Rainiers since he was last sent down, Kowar allowed six runs (three earned) over nine innings. He pitched eight scoreless outings during that stretch.

Kowar, who was acquired in trade with Atlanta in December 2023, missed all of last season after having Tommy John surgery.

Garcia, ranked as the Mariners’ No. 13 prospect by MLB Pipeline, made his major league debut Monday. The 25 year old allowed two runs (one earned) and struck out one over two innings in two appearances with Seattle.

An 11th-round pick in the 2023 draft, Garcia has a 3.51 ERA with 42 strikeouts over 33 1/3 innings in 32 minor league games across the Double-A and Triple-A levels this year.

The Mariners begin a three-game series at the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday at 6:38 p.m. Radio coverage begins on Seattle Sports 710 AM and the Seattle Sports app at 5:30 p.m. with the pregame show.
