Fans of the Kansas City Royals may be feeling a similar way as fans of the Baltimore Orioles did back in May after a trade with the Seattle Mariners.
The reasons ESPN’s Passan ‘firmly’ believes Seattle Mariners can win it all
The Mariners traded minor league catcher Julio E. Rodriguez – not to be confused with three-time M’s All-Star center fielder Julio Y. Rodríguez or recently suspended Astros minor league pitcher Julio C. Rodriguez – to the Royals in exchange for cash Tuesday.
The move comes two months after the Mariners traded Luis F. Castillo (another case where the middle initial holds much importance) to the Orioles for cash, which prompted some confusion as to which pitcher named Luis Castillo Baltimore was acquiring. Much to chagrin of Orioles fans, it was not three-time All-Star Luis M. Castillo, who the team had been linked to during the offseason.
Julio E. Rodriguez, 28, signed a minor league contract with the Mariners in January. He appeared in 15 games with the Double-A Arkansas Travelers this season while bouncing between the active roster and development list. Rodriguez, who is in his ninth minor league season, slashed .231/298/.365 with one double, two home runs and eight RBIs.
The deal gives Seattle some added cash as the MLB’s July 31 trade deadline approaches. The Mariners, who hold a wild card spot and are chasing the first-place Houston Astros in the American League West, are expected to be one of the more aggressive teams at the deadline.
The Mariners continue a three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday. Radio coverage begins on Seattle Sports 710 AM and the Seattle Sports app at 5:30 p.m.
