Mariners trade RHP Luis F. Castillo to Orioles

The Seattle Mariners traded right-handed pitcher Luis F. Castillo – not to be confused with three-time All-Star right-hander Luis Castillo – to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for cash considerations on Wednesday night. The move came after Seattle designated Luis F. Castillo for assignment on Tuesday.

The Mariners signed Luis F. Castillo to a minor league contract in January and promoted him from Triple-A Tacoma in early April to fill the No. 5 spot in their rotation for a pair of starts. The opening in Seattle’s rotation was a result of right-hander Emerson Hancock being sent down to Tacoma after a rough season debut. Hancock was filling in for All-Star right-hander George Kirby, who opened the year on the injured list with shoulder inflammation.

In his two starts with the Mariners, Luis F. Castillo allowed six earned runs and seven hits in seven innings. He struck out five and walked seven.

Luis F. Castillo was sent back down to Tacoma on April 10 and Hancock later resumed his spot in Seattle’s rotation the following week. Luis F. Castillo posted a 5.02 ERA in 14 1/3 innings over four starts with the Rainiers before being traded to Baltimore.

In another move, the Mariners have brought back veteran pitcher Casey Lawrence on a minor league contract.

The Mariners are sitting atop the American League West at 22-14, which is the second-best record in the AL behind the Detroit Tigers. Seattle has won nine consecutive series, its longest such streak since it won 15 straight series during its record-setting 116-win campaign in 2001.

The Mariners are off Thursday before opening a six-game homestand on Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays.
