Mariners Lineup: Montes a bench bat vs LHP in Red Sox finale

The Seattle Mariners will have Lazaro Montes available off the bench Wednesday, as he is not in the lineup to start the day after his impactful MLB debut.

The Mariners have trade deadline acquisition Taylor Ward, a right-handed hitter, in the lineup as the No. 6 hitter and right fielder against Red Sox left-hander Patrick Sandoval (1-3, 4.20 ERA) in the 1:10 p.m. series finale at Fenway Park.

Montes being on the bench Wednesday isn’t a surprise, even after he went 2 for 4 with a home run, a walk and two RBIs in his first game with the M’s on Tuesday night. The lefty slugger was much better against right-handed pitching (.278 average, 1.063 OPS) than left-handers (.200 average, .687 OPS) in the minor leagues this season.

The 21-year-old outfielder could still get his name called Wednesday, though it may just be in a pinch as the Boston bullpen is loaded with lefties, including All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman.

Also notable for Seattle on Wednesday is that catcher Cal Raleigh, the reigning American League Player of the Week, is out of the lineup, which is typical for a day game after a night game. Jhonny Pereda will catch M’s starting pitcher Bryce Miller (4-8, 4.12 ERA) and hit ninth, while Dominic Canzone is the designated hitter and hitting second with Ward in right.

Weston Wilson is starting at third base for Seattle, as has been the case lately against left-handed pitchers.

Miller will be pitching for the first time in 10 days. The Mariners announced he was moving to the bullpen last week, but those plans were scuttled before he made a relief appearance when Emerson Hancock landed on the 15-day injured list Sunday.

For the third straight time in the series, the Red Sox will run out the exact same lineup against a Mariners right-handed starter.

The Mariners enter the day with a 65-74 record, which puts them five games back of the AL West-leading Houston Astros (70-69) and 5 1/2 games out of a wild card spot. The Red Sox (75-64) are 4 1/2 games up for the second of the three wild cards out of the American League.

Following Wednesday’s game, Seattle will head home to begin a four-game series Thursday night against the Athletics (53-86) at T-Mobile Park.
