Mariners could announce new general manager as soon as Monday

The Mariners’ search for a new general manager appears to be over and the announcement could come as soon as Monday.

Two known final candidates, former Angels GM Jerry Dipoto and Yankees assistant GM Billy Eppler, had final interviews late last week. Dipoto, who is currently a consultant with the Red Sox, met with the Mariners on Friday. It is not clear whether or not there were other candidates involved in the final interview process.

When the Mariners fired Jack Zduriencik last month, team president Kevin Mather admitted he was leaning toward finding a candidate with previous GM experience. Since that day, Mather has not commented on candidates or the process and has made multiple trips to interview candidates. One of them was Mariners assistant GM Jeff Kingston, who took over Zduriencik’s duties after he was fired.

The Angels are known to be in the mix for Eppler, who according to reports finished second to Dipoto for the job in 2011. Former Padres GM Josh Byrnes, who may have been of interest to the Mariners as well, is also reported to be on Anaheim’s radar.

On the day he announced that Zduriencik had been fired, Mather said he hoped to have the new GM in place by the end of the season or shortly after.

Also of note with Seattle’s front office, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported Monday that Mariners farm director Chris Gwynn interviewed for the Angels’ GM opening on Sunday.
