Colt Emerson’s first career walkoff lifts Mariners over Twins

A near disaster turned into another walkoff win for the Seattle Mariners.

Rookie Colt Emerson singled to score pinch-runner Stuart Farichild with one out in bottom of the ninth inning to send the Mariners to a 7-6 win over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday at T-Mobile Park, clinching the three-game series.

Seattle improved to 55-58 with its second walkoff win in as many days.

In a 1-2 count against Twins right-hander Yoendrys Gómez, Emerson hit a low line drive through the right side of the infield for the first walkoff hit of his career.

Josh Naylor set the table for the winning swing, hitting a leadoff single then going first to third on a one-out single by Victor Robles. Naylor was lifted for Fairchild after an awkward slide into third base.

Emerson’s walkoff came after the Mariners surrendered a six-run lead over the final two innings.

Cal Raleigh blasted a three-run homer in the seventh for what looked like all the insurance the Mariners would need to cruise to a series win.

But then it all unraveled in the top of the eighth.

Ryan Kreidler reached base to leadoff the inning on a throwing error by Emerson and Trevor Larnach followed with a two-run homer to right field to make 6-2.

After a groundout and a double, the M’s turned to left-hander Jose Ferrer. Kody Clemens reached on an infield single that deflected of Ferrer’s glove and Royce Lewis clubbed three-run blast to center field to pull Minnesota within 6-5. It was the second time Lewis homered off Ferrer in the series.

Luke Keaschall tied the game with a leadoff home run off Andrés Muñoz in the ninth, but Emerson answered back with the winning hit in the bottom half.

Muñoz (5-4) was credited with the win.

Seattle starter George Kirby struck out three over seven scoreless innings in a no-decision.
