Report: Teams getting sense M’s George Kirby available in trades

A third Seattle Mariners starting pitcher is reportedly thought to be available on the trade market.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Saturday morning that multiple teams have engaged the Mariners about a potential trade for George Kirby and they have gotten the sense he is available and could be moved before the trade deadline, which is Monday at 3 p.m.

It had previously been reported that the Mariners were willing to trade right-handers Luis Castillo and Emerson Hancock, but multiple reports over the past couple of weeks have stated the club was unwilling to part with its other starters: Kirby, Logan Gilbert, Bryan Woo and Bryce Miller.

Kirby has long been lauded for his combination of pinpoint command and high velocity, which helped him earn an All-Star nod during his second season in 2023. But the right-hander hasn’t been near as effective since an injury-shortened year last season.

The 2019 first-round pick started 2025 on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation before returning in late May and posting a career-worst 4.21 ERA in 126 innings over 23 starts, which included the highest walk rate of his career at 5.5%. This season he has a 3.98 ERA and career-worst 1.30 WHIP over 120 innings in 20 starts. His 131 hits allowed are the most in the American League.

Prior to the past two seasons, Kirby had a 3.43 ERA and 1.09 WHIP over 511 2/3 innings over his first three big league campaigns. He led baseball with a 3.1% walk rate over that stretch.

Kirby, a Super Two qualifier, is in his second year of arbitration and making $6.55 million this season, according to Spotrac. He is under club control through the 2028. Logan Gilbert, who is under club control through next season, is the only of Seattle’s homegrown starters set to hit free agency before Kirby.
