The Seahawks continued to do some roster maneuvering on Monday, two days after they made some unexpected cuts to get their roster down to 53 players.

Seattle placed veteran tight end Ed Dickson on injured reserve and re-signed veteran wide receiver Jaron Brown, who along with backup quarterback Geno Smith was maybe the most surprising player to be released ahead of Saturday’s roster deadline. Based on how quickly the Seahawks brought back both Smith and Brown, it seems very likely that Seattle’s front office had an understanding with both players that they wouldn’t be unemployed for long.

The Seahawks weren’t done for the day, however – or done with surprising cuts. On Monday afternoon Seattle announced that it had waived linebacker Austin Calitro and re-signed fullback Nick Bellore, who had been released Saturday. Calitro started five games last season with Seattle, was a vital piece on special teams and continued to stand out in training camp and the preseason.

The 32-year-old Dickson is recovering from knee surgery, but by virtue of being on Seattle’s initial 53-man roster he will be eligible to return to the team after the first eight games of the season. If the Seahawks had placed him on IR Saturday it would have prevented him from playing at all in 2019. Dickson had 12 receptions for 143 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games (one start) for Seattle last year, his ninth season in the NFL and first with the Seahawks.

Brown, 29, is expected to be the No. 2 wide receiver behind Tyler Lockett this year. He joined the Seahawks in 2018 after spending the first five seasons of his career with Arizona. While Brown caught just 14 passes for 166 yards last year, five of his receptions were touchdowns. Seattle’s coaching staff had indicated in the offseason that Brown would have a larger role in the offense after being underutilized in 2018.

Calitro, 25, had 45 tackles, a half-sack and a pass defended in 16 games as a rookie with Seattle last season.

Bellore, 30, is a nine-year veteran who transitioned from linebacker to fullback in 2017.
