Soundgarden reunites to play halftime of Seahawks’ season opener

The last time the Seattle Seahawks won the Super Bowl, legendary Seattle rock band Soundgarden played a concert at their season opener.

So just like the Seahawks are doing this year on the heels of the second Super Bowl championship in team history, Soundgarden isn’t running it back but instead running it forward.

Soundgarden announced Tuesday that it will reunite to play halftime of the Seahawks’ season opener on Wednesday, Sept. 9 against the New England Patriots at Seattle’s Lumen Field. The surviving members of the band will be joined by The Pretty Reckless lead singer Taylor Momsen and Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready, who will fill the shoes of late Soundgarden singer/guitarist Chris Cornell.

Momsen and McCready joined Soundgarden onstage last year in a performance when the band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Los Angeles. Momsen has also joined the band for performances at a pair of tribute concerts, including the 2019 “I Am the Highway” concert in LA in tribute to Cornell.

On Sept. 4, 2014, Soundgarden played a six-song set at the north plaza of Lumen Field (then known as CenturyLink Field) before the Seahawks’ 36-16 win over the Green Bay Packers.

Soundgarden is expected to release new music next year for the first time since 2012, which is when they released the “King Animal” album. Lead guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Ben Shepherd and drummer Matt Cameron have reached the mixing stage on eight songs recorded around the final vocal performances by Cornell, Cameron said last month. The band was in the process of writing a new album at the time of Cornell’s death in 2017.

Speaking of the Seahawks and music, a teaser clip released ahead of Tuesday’s fourth episode of the team’s season of “Hard Knocks” on HBO features defensive tackle Uso Seumalo showing off his guitar and singing abilities during the team’s rookie talent show. Seumalo nails a rendition of Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry” that honestly could be up there with Cornell’s version of “Redemption Song” on the list of great Marley covers.
