Seahawks cornerback DeShawn Shead has been cleared to return to the field almost one year after suffering a season-ending ACL injury.

“Green light to play Sunday! It’s that time again!” Shead tweeted Sunday.

The team officially announced the move Sunday afternoon. The return of the corner will provide a boost for defense and special teams for the Seahawks’ must-win game against the Dallas Cowboys Sunday.

Head coach Pete Carroll alluded to the move Friday.

“DeShawn Shead has a chance to play Sunday,” Carroll told reporters. “We’ll see in a little bit. We’ll see if we can do it or not. We’ll let you know.”

Shead returned to team practice for the first time this season Dec. 6. The return kicked off a three-week timeline, by the end of which Seattle would have to either activate Shead, place him on the Injured Reserve, or waive him.

Because Seattle had an open roster spot (made when the team waived Kache Palacio Dec. 19) the addition of Shead did not require a corresponding move.

The move is significant step forward for Shead, who originally suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament during the Seahawks’ playoff loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Jan. 14. The veteran corner underwent reconstructive knee surgery in late January. His recovery was further delayed in July, when he underwent a second surgery on the knee to clear up excess scar tissue.

Shead, 28, originally signed with Seattle in 2012 as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Portland State. After starting out on the practice squad, he was promoted to the active roster in 2013 and eventually earned the starting corner job opposite Richard Sherman.
