SEATTLE – Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold sustained a hip injury on the first series of Wednesday night’s season opener against the New England Patriots.

Darnold was initially listed as questionable to return, but was ruled out shortly before halftime. He was replaced by backup Drew Lock.

Darnold appeared to get hurt on Seattle’s fifth snap of the game, when he landed on his right knee as former Seahawks edge rusher Dre’Mont Jones brought him to the turf for a third-down sack.

Darnold limped off the field and was evaluated in the medical tent on the sideline. He then limped to the locker room for further evaluations.

Third-stringer Jalen Milroe is Seattle’s emergency third quarterback.
