The Seahawks’ most impressive player at training camp is clear

The defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks have been hard at work the past few weeks at training camp, and one player in particular is standing out, according to Brock Huard.

That would be third-year defensive tackle Byron Murphy II.

Huard, a longtime Seattle Sports voice and former NFL quarterback, is expecting yet another evolution in the game of Murphy, who improved from 32 tackles and a half-sack as a rookie in 2024 to 61 tackles and seven sacks last year.

Here’s what Huard had to say about Murphy in the Blue 88 segment of Monday’s edition of Brock and Salk on Seattle Sports.

• Question: Who has been the most impressive and dominant Seahawk through the first couple weeks of camp?

It’s the same guy that we watched go from a good, serviceable rookie year to a great second year, and (is) on his way to becoming, at least through camp, an elite, Defensive Player of the Year kind of candidate, and that’s Byron Murphy.

So rookie year, a little hamstring knocked him out for a bunch of the games. … He was there, he was present. But frankly, he looked a little bit like the guy I saw at Texas with T’Vondre Sweat, that could play a couple downs at an immensely high level and then he was kind of off the field, and so there wasn’t massive accumulation in numbers while at Texas. That was kind of his rookie year, and it was good. Worthy of a first-round pick. Good player.

Last year was great: 62 tackles, seven tackles for loss, seven sacks out of a run stopper. It was a great year. Put a big old chip on his shoulder – didn’t get any recognition really from it. Not a Pro Bowler, certainly not All-Pro, and not even really in the top guys listed heading into this season after that kind of work, and you feel that.

He looks phenomenal. He’s in great, great shape. I think he then wants to go from good to great to elite. Give me double-digit sacks. Byron Murphy puts up double-digit sacks, you know where he’s going to be on next year’s Jeremy Fowler list (of the NFL’s top defensive tackles)? You know where he’s going to be after the season? He’s going to be in the Pro Bowl, and he’s going to be talked about as one of the best defensive linemen and defensive tackles in all the NFL. And hopefully a rich contract will follow.
