Cal Raleigh delivers the winning hit in return to Mariners

SEATTLE – It didn’t take Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh long to make an impact in his return from the injured list.

Playing in his first game back since missing a month with a right oblique strain, Raleigh provided the clutch hit the Mariners needed, lining a tiebreaking two-run single to center field in the bottom of the seventh inning, to help the Mariners beat the Orioles 3-1 on Tuesday night.

The win improved Seattle’s record to 38-36 on the season.

Raleigh’s clutch hit came after the M’s loaded the bases with one out.

Victor Robles led off the infield with a hard-hit infield single that ricocheted off the glove of third baseman Blaze Alexander, Colt Emerson followed with a sharp single to left field and J.P. Crawford worked a one-out walk to bring up Raleigh.

Orioles manager Craig Albernaz came out to the mound for a visit with left-hander Grant Wolfram before Raleigh’s at-bat, but elected to stick with the lefty, which proved to be the wrong choice.

After the mound visit, Raleigh lined a single to center field that scored Robles and Emerson to give Seattle a 3-1 advantage.

The hit was Raleigh’s first of the game. He finished 1 for 3 with a walk and the two RBIs.

The two-run single came just in time to help Logan Gilbert earn his fifth win of the season. The right-hander tied a season high with seven innings pitched, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while racking up a season-high 10 strikeouts.
