Report: Mitch Garver signing minor league deal with Yankees

After being released by the Seattle Mariners earlier this week, veteran catcher Mitch Garver is signing a minor league contract with the New York Yankees, according to multiple reports on Friday.

Garver was released amid a series of Mariners roster moves on Tuesday. The 35-year-old catcher slashed .175/.302/.294 with four home runs, three doubles and a .596 OPS in 50 games with Seattle this season.

Jhonny Pereda, who was called up from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday, has assumed the backup catcher role previously manned by Garver.

A 10-year MLB veteran, Garver hit .270 with 19 homers and an .870 OPS while helping the Texas Rangers to a World Series title in 2023. But after signing with the Mariners in December 2023, Garver’s production plummeted. He hit just .185 with 28 homers and a .626 OPS in 251 games over his three seasons in Seattle.
