Mariners make 7 roster moves, including Brendan Donovan’s return

The Seattle Mariners announced seven roster moves ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against the Detroit Tigers, which will be their first game since Monday’s MLB trade deadline.

The announced moves include Seattle’s two key trade additions, outfielder Taylor Ward and relief pitcher Seranthony Domínguez, reporting to the club. The Mariners also have two returns on Tuesday, with utility player Brendan Donovan reinstated from the 10-day injured list as expected, and catcher Jhonny Pereda recalled from Triple-A Tacoma.

To make room for the four players on the active roster, catcher Mitch Garver and outfielder Rob Refsnyder have been released, and outfielder Stuart Fairchild has been designated for assignment.

The moves with Garver, Refsnyder and Pereda were previously reported Tuesday.

The Mariners had one spot open on the active roster after sending reliever Alex Hoppe to the Baltimore Orioles on Monday as part of the trade for Ward.

Ward is hitting .246/.383/.346 with a .729 OPS this season, and leads the American League with 87 walks. He has traded power for a higher on-base percentage this season, as he has just seven home runs after hitting a career-high 36 for the Los Angeles Angels in 2025.

Domínguez, who was acquired in a four-player trade Saturday that sent starting pitcher Luis Castillo to the Chicago White Sox, has a 3.99 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 12 saves in 43 appearances this year.

Donovan returns after 2 1/2 months on the injured list with a left groin muscle strain, which came after he underwent surgery in October for a sports hernia. Seattle’s key offseason trade addition from the St. Louis Cardinals, he has slashed .274/.386/.452 for an .839 OPS with three home runs, a triple and four doubles in 25 games this season. He was the Mariners’ starting third baseman and primary leadoff hitter against right-handed starting pitchers early in the season.

Pereda hit .310 (17 for 63) with two homers in 19 games for the M’s this year. He saw a good amount of playing time while starting catcher Cal Raleigh was on the injured list in May and June.

Garver hit .175 with four homers, three doubles, 15 RBIs and 22 walks to 49 strikeouts in 50 games for Seattle in 2026.

Refsnyder struggled after joining the Mariners as an offseason signing to the tune of a .140 average with four home runs, a double, 11 RBIs and eight walks to 37 strikeouts in 53 games.

Fairchild, a Seattle native who recently rejoined the Mariners organization after being let go by the Cleveland Guardians, made just one appearance on this stint with Seattle, scoring the winning run as a pinch runner in Sunday’s walkoff win over the Minnesota Twins.
