The Seahawks are bringing in a familiar name to add depth at cornerback just ahead of Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline, making a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars for former UW Huskies standout Sidney Jones on Monday afternoon.

News of the trade was first broken by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and the Jaguars made an official announcement shortly after. The return going from Seattle to Jacksonville will be a 2022 sixth-round pick, according to ESPN Seahawks reporter Brady Henderson.

Jones, a 2017 second-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles, was a two-time first team All-Pac-12 selection during a stellar college career at Washington, but he had a rocky transition to the NFL as he suffered a torn Achilles during his pro day prior to the 2017 draft. The injury limited him to appearing in just one game as a rookie with Philadelphia, but he played 21 games and made eight starts over the next two seasons with the Eagles.

He landed with the Jaguars last September after he was cut by Philadelphia, quickly getting a promotion from Jacksonville’s practice squad just eight days after he failed to make the Eagles’ roster. Jones played in nine games and made six starts last season with Jacksonville, making two interceptions and setting career-high marks with nine passes defensed and 26 combined tackles.

Jones has four career interceptions, all coming in the last two seasons.

Jake Heaps, a former Seahawks quarterback and current co-host of 710 ESPN Seattle’s Jake and Stacy, tweeted after news of Seattle’s trade that the addition of Jones is “intriguing” but “a projection move” because Jones is mostly unproven in the NFL. The Seahawks have a lack of stability at the cornerback spot opposite presumed starter D.J. Reed entering the 2021 season.

This is the second trade for a cornerback the Seahawks have made in the last week. They previously acquired John Reid from the Houston Texans on Aug. 24.
