Seahawks Football 101: How everyone played a part in keeping the Rams out of the end zone

The Seahawks have a lot to be proud of this week when it comes to their defense. Most likely on top of that list is the fact that Seattle won the NFC West title on Sunday by holding the Los Angeles Rams completely out of the end zone in a 20-9 victory.

Rost’s Takeaways: Who on Seahawks’ defense deserves attention

Not that the Rams didn’t get really close to a touchdown, though. In fact, LA had a first-and-goal at Seattle’s 2-yard line at a pivotal point in the third quarter, which came on the drive directly after the first Seahawks touchdown of the game put them ahead 13-6.

What happened next was an incredible series of events that may be the moment of the season for Seattle’s defense. The Rams ran four straight running plays, but the Seahawks got to the ball carrier each time before they could break the plane of the end zone, resulting in a gigantic turnover on downs.

In the latest episode of Football 101, Dave Wyman of 710 ESPN Seattle’s Wyman and Bob puts that incredible goal-line stand into focus. The former Seahawks and Denver Broncos linebacker was on the call with Steve Raible at Lumen Field for all of Sunday’s action, and nobody has a better perspective on what the defense did to stop the Rams than Wyman.

In the video, Wyman explains how every part of Seattle’s defense factored into keeping Los Angeles from scoring, whether it was push by the defensive line, the instincts of K.J. Wright and the rest of the linebackers, or an insane shoestring tackle by Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams.
