Wyman’s Football 101: Why Seahawks didn’t stop Ravens on 4th down TD run

In the Seahawks’ 30-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday, one play sticks out above the rest.

Seahawks reportedly trade for safety help, get Quandre Diggs from Lions

That would be Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson’s 8-yard touchdown run on a fourth-and-2 play (watch it here) with the game tied 13-13 in the third quarter. The Ravens took a lead that Seattle would never threaten the rest of the way, and Baltimore was able to hand the Seahawks their second loss at home this season.

There’s an interesting backstory to the play. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh originally decided to send his kicking team out to attempt a short field goal, and Jackson wanted to go for it. Jackson pleaded his case, as John Clayton details in this post, so the Ravens called a timeout and drew up a play.

What about that play worked? In this week’s Football 101, Seahawks radio color commentator and former NFL linebacker Dave Wyman breaks down how the Ravens were able to load up on one side of the line of scrimmage to create the push Jackson needed to break free. Wyman also shows how a young member of Seattle’s defense could have had a shot at tackling Jackson if not for a small miscalculation.

The 5-2 Seahawks will continue play Sunday in Atlanta against the 1-6 Falcons. Wyman will be on the call with play-by-play man Steve Raible on the 710 ESPN Seattle and KIRO Radio 97.3 FM broadcast for the game, which will kick off at 10 a.m.
