Watch: Rayshawn Jenkins makes franchise history with fumble-return TD

SEATTLE – Seattle Seahawks safety Rayshawn Jenkins put his name in the NFL record books on Sunday afternoon.

At the tail end of a marathon first-quarter drive, the New York Giants were facing fourth-and-goal from inside the 1-yard line. Giants running back Eric Gray took a handoff up the middle and tried to leap across the goal line, but was met by a wall of Seattle defenders. Among them was linebacker Jerome Baker, who knocked the ball free.

Jenkins then scooped up the fumble in the end zone and ran it all the way back for a 102-yard score, turning what was nearly a 7-0 deficit into a 7-0 lead for the Seahawks.

It was tied for the third-longest fumble return in NFL history and is the longest in Seattle franchise history, according to Stathead. The previous franchise record was an 83-yard fumble-return TD by defensive end Antonio Edwards against the Denver Broncos in 1995. It also was tied for the second-longest return of any kind in franchise history, trailing only Tyler Lockett’s 105-yard kickoff return TD against the Chicago Bears in 2015.

Jenkins’ fumble-return score came on the 16th play of a 79-yard drive by the Giants. Baker not only forced the fumble, but also came up with a big hit on the previous third-and-goal play, stopping Gray at the 1-yard line for no gain on a toss sweep. Baker is playing in his first game since missing the previous two weeks with a hamstring injury.
