The wrinkle Brock wants to see more of from Seahawks’ offense

“More Rashid Shaheed," Brock Huard said when asked what adjustments Seattle can make with its run game.

One of the big questions facing the Seattle Seahawks entering this season was how their run game would look following the departure of Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III in free agency.

Stacy Rost: Seahawks’ offense showed something important in Week 4 win

Walker had been the Seahawks’ most explosive back. And in addition to his absence, running back Zach Charbonnet began this season on the physically unable to perform list following his ACL tear in January, meaning he’d miss at least the first four games of the season.

Through the first four weeks of the season, the run game has been a bit of a mixed bag for Seattle. It has rushed for 100 yards or more twice and was just three yards away from hitting the 100-yard mark in the season opener. But it also had an abysmal 44-yard rushing performance in Week 3 against Washington and hasn’t produced much in terms of explosive runs along the way.

The running back room also took a major blow this past week when rookie first-round pick Jadarian Price was placed on injured reserve, leaving Seattle down to Emanuel Wilson, George Holani and Velus Jones Jr. as the healthy running backs on its 53-man roster.

What kind of adjustments can the Seahawks make to improve their run game? During his Blue 88 segment on Monday’s edition of Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk, former NFL quarterback Brock Huard called for more a wrinkle the offense showed in Sunday’s win over the Chargers.

“More Rashid Shaheed,” Huard said. “(He had) two carries yesterday. He got the explosive run (on a) beautiful toss play (that was) well blocked.”

Shaheed totaled 33 yards on his two carries, including a 28-yard TD on the toss play Huard referenced. It was the longest rush of the year by a Seahawk and just the second run of at least 20 yards by the team this season. Price had the other on a 25-yard run in Week 2.

Huard likened the Seahawks using Shaheed in the run game to what the rival San Francisco 49ers have been able to do with versatile wide receiver Deebo Samuel in the past and once again this year since his return to the team, though Shaheed is a different style runner.

“(They) try to take some of the load off Christian McCaffrey over the course of the season from a lesson learned last year, and they’ve got old Debo back there. He’s got guys bouncing off of him still… He’s remarkable because you can’t tackle him, and it’s not like he’s Derrick Henry. But his lower half and his power in his legs – if you don’t wrap, you don’t tackle him,” Huard said.

“Shaheed’s a little different. He is absolute speed. And when you can get him on the toss sweep, you get him on the jet sweep, you can get him into some of your run action, it does turn into some punt return kind of looks for him with space – and we know how unbelievably dynamic he is. So, that was a cool little adjustment to add some explosion, to add a gear that George and Emanuel just don’t have.”
