Seahawks add WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling in free agency, per report

The Seattle Seahawks have reportedly taken their first step toward replacing two of the best wide receivers in franchise history.

Speedy veteran wideout Marquez Valdes-Scantling is signing with Seattle on a one-year contract, per insider Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. The deal is worth $5.5 million, according to Pelissero.

The news comes within a week of the Seahawks releasing Tyler Lockett after a decade with the team and reportedly trading DK Metcalf, a two-time Pro Bowler, to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 30-year-old Valdez-Scantling, who is often referred to by his initials MVS, gives Seattle’s offense a needed deep threat with some size at receiver after losing Metcalf. Like like Metcalf, Valdez-Scantling is 6 foot 4, though he is nearly 30 pounds lighter at 206 pounds.

Valdez-Scantling split the 2024 season between Buffalo and New Orleans, signing with the Saints less than a week after he was released by the Bills in October. He finished the year with 411 yards and four touchdowns on 19 receptions (44 targets).

In New Orleans, Valdez-Scantling played under Klint Kubiak, who was the Saints offensive coordinator and hired to the same position for the Seahawks earlier this year.

Valdez-Scantling played in college at North Carolina State and South Florida, and was selected in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers after running the 40-yard dash in 4.37 seconds in the NFL combine.

His best season was 2020, his third as a pro, when he caught 33 passes for 690 yards, six touchdowns, and a league-leading 20.9 yards per reception.

Valdez-Scantling spent his first four seasons with Green Bay, then two with Kansas City, where he won back-to-back Super Bowls.

For his career, Valdez-Scantling has 3,566 yards and 20 TDs on 205 catches, and his 17.4 yards per reception ranks third among all players since 2000 with at least 125 catches.

Valdez-Scantling is the third reported addition by the Seahawks in free agency after quarterback Sam Darnold and offensive lineman Josh Jones. At wide receiver in Seattle, MVS joins Jaxon Smith-Njigba (JSN), who was a first-time Pro Bowler last season.

The NFL opened free agency Monday with the two-day “legal tampering” period, allowing teams to negotiate with free agents from other teams. Franchises can officially sign free agents at 1 p.m. Wednesday when the new league year starts.
