Seattle Seahawks lose cornerback to rival 49ers in free agency

One of the Seattle Seahawks’ cornerbacks is hopping to the other side of the team’s rivalry with the San Francisco 49ers.

Tre Brown is signing with the Niners, according to an Instagram post by The Sports Entertainment Group, the agency that represents him.

The terms of the contract have yet to be reported.

The 27-year-old Brown appeared in 13 games for Seattle in 2024, including three starts. He made 26 tackles and one pass defensed.

Brown began last season as Seattle’s third cornerback but lost the role after dealing with a midseason ankle injury.

Brown’s best season in the NFL was 2023, when he played a career-high 15 games with seven starts. He set personal bests that year with two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, six passes defensed, two forced fumbles, a sack, two tackles for loss and 34 tackles.

Seattle drafted the 5-foot-10, 185-pound Brown in 2021 with the No. 137 overall pick in the fourth round out of Oklahoma, where he had gained a reputation for important plays in big moments.

Brown’s time with the Seahawks was marked by injury, however. He played just five games as a rookie in 2021 and six in 2022.

While Brown leaves for elsewhere in the NFC West, the Seahawks have a strong core of cornerbacks remaining on their roster including Pro Bowlers Devon Witherspoon and Riq Woolen, plus recent re-signing Josh Jobe, who was a surprise contributor who came off the practice squad last season and moved into the third CB role previously held by Brown.

The two-day “legal tampering” period of NFL free agency began Monday, allowing teams to negotiate with free agents from other teams. Franchises will be allowed to officially sign free agents when the new league year starts at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
