Seahawks let OC Ryan Grubb go after one season

Jan 6, 2025, 9:22 AM | Updated: 7:15 pm

The Seattle Seahawks have relieved first-time NFL offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb of his duties after just one season, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on social media Monday morning.

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald confirmed the report soon after during his weekly appearance on Seattle Sports.

The move comes after an up-and-down year for Seattle’s offense, which finished 18th in points per game (22.1) and 21st in points per drive (1.89).

The Seahawks struggled all season to find run-pass balance, ranking eighth in passing yards per game (236.5) but just 28th in rushing yards per game (95.7) and 19th in yards per carry (4.2). They ran the ball on just 37.2% of their plays, which was the fifth-lowest rate in the league. Seattle suffered once again from subpar offensive line play and a lack of continuity up front, with injuries forcing the team to use 10 different starting offensive linemen over the course of the season.

“I felt like the direction our offense was going was different than the vision I had for our team, and felt like it was just a necessary decision at this point,” Macdonald said on Seattle Sports.

More: Brock Huard’s two reasons Seahawks moved on from Grubb

The 48-year-old Grubb was hired to join Macdonald’s staff last February after the Seahawks moved on from longtime head coach Pete Carroll. It was Grubb’s first time coaching at the NFL level after a long run of success in the college ranks.

Grubb spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons as the offensive coordinator across town at UW, where he oversaw a high-flying Huskies attack that was one of the most prolific offenses in college football. Prior to that, he had success at Fresno State, Eastern Michigan and NAIA-level University of Sioux Falls. Grubb was set to follow former UW head coach Kalen DeBoer to Alabama to become the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator before taking the Seahawks’ OC job.

Looking back: How much was Grubb handcuffed by Seahawks’ O-line woes?

Seattle will enter the 2025 season with its third different offensive coordinator in three years. Shane Waldron was the Seahawks’ OC for three seasons from 2021 through 2023 before leaving to become the Chicago Bears’ OC last January. Waldron was let go by Chicago in November – just nine games into the season – amid a struggling year for the Bears’ offense.

Seattle wrapped up a 10-7 campaign on Sunday with a win over the Los Angeles Rams, but missed the playoffs after being on the wrong side of a strength-of-victory tiebreaker with the NFC West champion Rams.
