Seahawks’ big concern going into season is kicker Jason Myers

The Seattle Seahawks had a chance to end the preseason with a win, something they came up short of accomplishing in the two games prior to Friday’s finale in Kansas City. But with a 52-yard field goal attempt as time expired, kicker Jason Myers’ try sailed just wide, and the game ended in a 9-9 tie.

It might not be too much of a concern if that was the only kick Myers missed in the preseason – but it wasn’t. As a matter of fact, it was the 35 year old’s fifth missed kick in three games in August.

That’s plenty to sound the alarm as the two-time Pro Bowler enters his 12th NFL season and eighth as Seattle’s kicker.

Myers finished the preseason just 2 for 5 on field goals, missing attempts from 52, 45 and 44 yards while making kicks from 48 and 46. He also was just 2 for 4 on PATs, though one of those was actually from 48 yards out due to a penalty.

It’s quite the difference from last season when Myers made 49 of 56 field goals plus all 59 of his PAT attempts combined between the regular season and playoffs. Not only that, but Myers is less than six months removed from making a Super Bowl-record five field goals to help the Seahawks beat the New England Patriots for the title in February.

‘Woeful preseason’

The negative is Jason Myers. He’s missed five kicks. And some of them leak to the right – most of them – and then he duck hooks one. Like, he’s setting up on the left hash to play that little power fade that he likes to do, and then he absolutely like a golfer just overcorrects and duck hooks that thing.

So from a confidence standpoint, if (backup QB Jalen) Milroe goes into the regular season head held high, let’s go, I’m ready, I feel good if it ever gets to that – Jason Myers, back to the drawing board. Because it’s not been one, it’s not been two, it’s not been three, it’s not been just PATs – that (last missed kick) was even a game-winner. I don’t like the feel of any of that at all.

And by the way, every one of those was a perfect hold. Snap, hold, boom. It wasn’t like a bad snap. It wasn’t anything that took off his timing or his rhythm. To use a golf analogy, it was not in a divot. Those were not 60-yarders. These are PATs and kicks you’ve got to make – and have made. He had a woeful, woeful preseason.
