What stood out from Seahawks’ preseason finale vs Chiefs

Third-string quarterback Jalen Milroe shined as the Seattle Seahawks capped their preseason slate with a 9-9 tie against the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday night.

Here’s a closer look at Milroe’s performance and what else stood out for Seattle.

Milroe shows progress

When the Seahawks drafted Milroe with a third-round pick in 2025, they did so knowing the dual-threat Alabama QB needed a lot of polishing as a passer and decision-maker in the pocket. Milroe showed significant strides in those areas Friday night while delivering the best preseason performance of his young career.

Milroe was sharp, decisive and in rhythm throughout the night, completing 16 of 26 passes for 223 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. He rushed for just 20 yards on seven carries, but used his legs on multiple occasions to extend plays for completions. And he only took one sack, despite consistent pressure from the Chiefs’ pass rush.

One play that epitomized Milroe’s performance came on Seattle’s second series. Backed up in his own end zone, he took a shotgun snap, stayed patient in the pocket and lofted a well-placed deep ball down the middle of the field that split two defenders for a 40-yard completion to Cody White.

Later on, Milroe escaped pressure in the pocket and fired a pass over the middle to rookie Emmanuel Henderson Jr. for a 26-yard catch-and-run to the 1-yard line. Three plays later, Milroe worked through his progressions on third-and-goal and found tight end Nick Vannett for a 4-yard TD pass.

And Milroe nearly led a game-winning drive, connecting with Henderson for a 30-yard sideline completion that put Seattle on the fringe of field-goal range in the closing minutes. However, Jason Myers missed a potential 52-yard game-winner as time expired.

Diggs announces his presence

It didn’t take long for Trevon Diggs to make a splash play in his Seahawks debut.

The two-time Pro Bowl cornerback, who signed with Seattle on a one-year, minimum-salary deal on Aug. 19, came up with an interception midway through the first quarter. Diggs showed some veteran savvy on the play, undercutting starting wideout Xavier Worthy’s route to pick off an underthrown pass from third-string quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.

Diggs, a former second-round draft pick who had an NFL-leading 11 interceptions in 2021, is looking to resurrect a once-promising career that’s been derailed by knee injuries. He’s in the mix for a roster spot in Seattle’s crowded cornerback room, and his interception Friday night certainly helps his case.

Myers has rough preseason

Veteran kicker Jason Myers’ long missed field goal as time expired capped a rough preseason campaign.

He hit just 2 of 5 field-goal attempts – with makes of 48 and 46 yards, and misses from 52, 45 and 44 yards. He also converted just 2 of 4 extra-point attempts – although one of the missed PATs came on a 48-yarder that was pushed back by a penalty.

Four of Myers’ five misses this preseason were wide right. The other miss was an extra-point attempt that he pulled to the left on Friday night.

Myers made 49 of 56 field-goal attempts and all 59 of his extra-point attempts across both the regular season and postseason last year – including a Super Bowl-record five field goals in Seattle’s 29-13 triumph over the New England Patriots.

White bounces back

Cody White, who is battling for a back-end wide receiver spot, tallied three catches for 69 yards in the first quarter. The fifth-year wideout hauled in a leaping 40-yard reception in between two defenders and had a 19-yard catch-and-run to convert a third down.

It was a nice bounceback for White, who had a muffed punt and just one catch for 8 yards over Seattle’s first two preseason games.

Not just a special teams ace

The Seahawks drafted Henderson this spring for his ability on special teams, where his blazing speed makes him a top candidate to replace departed free agent Dareke Young as Seattle’s gunner in punt coverage. However, the rookie sixth-round pick also flashed his receiving upside on Friday night.

Henderson finished with three catches for 58 yards, including the late 30-yard reception that set up Seattle for a potential game-winning field goal. But his most impressive play came in the third quarter, when he fought through a defensive pass interference penalty from former Miami Dolphins nickelback Kader Kohou, made a leaping grab and then raced to the 1-yard line for a 26-yard catch-and-run.

Extra points

• Nehemiah Pritchett, who is battling for the third cornerback role, had a third-and-goal pass breakup in the second quarter.

• Rodney Thomas II, who is vying for a backup safety spot, delivered a big hit on tight end Noah Gray for a pass breakup on Seattle’s first defensive series.

• With the Chiefs facing third-and-goal from the 1-yard line early in the fourth quarter, Seahawks edge rusher Jalan Gaines raced around the right tackle and stopped a run up the middle for no gain.
