Instant Reaction: Seahawks dominate 49ers in divisional round

This time the scoreboard reflected what transpired on the field.

The Seattle Seahawks dominated from the opening whistle and thrashed the San Francisco 49ers 41-6 in the divisional round of the NFC playoffs on Saturday night at Lumen Field. Seattle advanced to host the winner of Sunday’s game between the second-seeded Chicago Bears and fifth-seeded Los Angeles Rams next Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the NFC title game at Lumen Field.

That was an absolute tail kicking! I was confident all week that the Hawks would win this game fairly easily. I did not expect a complete annihilation. Just like the game two weeks ago, the 49ers did NOTHING well and the Hawks did whatever they wanted.

I’m not sure what is left to be said about this Seahawks defense. Outstanding. Brilliant. Dominating. Suffocating. Mean. Physical. Fast. They all apply. So much so that Sam Darnold was 12 of 17 for 141 yards and one TD, and that was more than enough to hammer San Francisco 41-6.

Kennneth Walker III has been on a tear and that definitely continued tonight with his 116 yards and three TDs on just 19 carries.

There were some that were worried about rust setting in after the week off. Those concerned were dashed almost immediately with a 95-yard kickoff return for a TD from Rashid Shaheed and the 17-0 score after the first quarter.

What has been obvious to me is that if the Seahawks can continue to play clean football and eliminate the turnovers, they don’t lose! The only thing that can beat the Seahawks is themselves.

Mike Lefko – Wyman and Bob (2-7 p.m. weekdays)

A complete and thorough evisceration of the 49ers. The defense smothered, suffocated and squeezed the life out of the San Francisco offense. It’s exactly what you wanted and hoped would happen for a team that was well-rested against a team dealing with a multitude of injuries.

The Seahawks left no doubt and didn’t fall into the trap of letting an undermanned team hang around. There was the smallest sliver of an opening late in the second half with the Seahawks leading 17-6 and facing a third down, but they took advantage of a 49ers penalty and marched down the field, capping off an 80-yard drive with an emphatic Kenneth Walker III TD run.

Offensively, it was the ideal game plan as well and what has carried them over the last month: don’t force Sam Darnold to do too much and let the run game batter and bruise the opposing defense into submission.

A resounding statement made with the Seahawks one win away from the Super Bowl.
