Brock on Seahawks’ 2nd front office loss: ‘This one stings’

The Minnesota Vikings have now taken two longtime members of Seattle Seahawks GM John Schneider's front office this offseason.

For the second time in as many weeks, Seattle Seahawks president of football operations and general manager John Schneider lost a longtime member of his front office to an NFC rival.

What Brock Huard makes of latest Seahawks ownership report

Both losses went to the same team – the Minnesota Vikings. They first plucked Washington native Nolan Teasley, who was Schneider’s assistant GM, to be their new GM late last month. And over the weekend, Teasley reportedly tabbed Minnesota native Trent Kirchner, the Seahawks’ vice president of player personnel, to be his assistant GM.

Seattle Sports’ Brock Huard reacted to the two departures during Monday’s edition of Brock and Salk, relating it to something the late John Clayton would often refer to about player movement in the NFL.

“You lose one lineman, not that big a deal,” said Huard, a longtime FOX football broadcaster and former NFL quarterback. “You lose two linemen (or multiple people at) any position group, yeah, it starts to be a little bit of a more formidable conversation or task. You lose so much time on task together.”

Added Huard: “I can’t pretend to say this one won’t hurt. … This one stings a little bit.”

Both Teasley and Kirchner worked for a long time under Schneider – Teasley spent 13 years with the Seahawks including the last three as assistant GM, while the last 16 of Kirchner’s 27th NFL seasons have been with Seattle.

Their time working with Schneider is essentially irreplaceable for the reigning Super Bowl champion Hawks, Huard said.

“In my life experience in relationships, the more time together, the harder conversations you can have. You can just hold each other accountable and really put it all out there,” Huard said. “And when a change needed to be made a few years ago (with the Seahawks’ draft strategy), when their board was too big, Nolan Teasley and Trent Kirchner were probably right there with John – like, OK, we’ve got to remedy this. This board is too big. We’ve got to zero in on really what a Seahawk is.”

Huard was a bit optimistic about what the Seahawks will do next, but also realistic about the impact of losing both Teasley and Kirchner.

“You’re probably going to elevate from within. You’ve got a lot of personnel that’s done the job too,” he said. “But there will be some brain drain on this one.”
