Report: Seahawks sign former Saints cornerback

The Seattle Seahawks are adding a new face to their cornerback room.

The Seahawks are signing Shemar Jean-Charles, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on social media Saturday night.

Jean-Charles, a four-year pro, spent last season with the New Orleans Saints and made two starts while appearing in nine games. He had 14 tackles, two passes defended and one interception.

His one interception was one for the highlight reels, as he ripped a pass out of Carolina Panthers first-round pick Xavier Legette’s hands to turn a potential first-down reception into a takeaway.

The 26-year-old cornerback logged defensive snaps in just four of his appearances and also played special teams. He finished 172nd out of 222 cornerbacks with a 53.4 Pro Football Focus grade.

The addition comes after 2021 fourth-round pick Tre Brown departed for the NFC West rival San Francisco 49ers in free agency.

Jean-Charles figures to provide depth for a group of corners led by standout Devon Witherspoon and Riq Woolen. The Seahawks also re-signed No. 3 cornerback Josh Jobe last week.

Jean-Charles was a fifth-round pick by the Green Bay in 2021. The Appalachian State product spent his first two seasons with the Packers and played for both San Francisco and New Orleans in 2023.

In 37 career games, the 5-foot-10, 186-pound defensive back has 29 tackles, two passes defended and one interception.

Jean-Charles was a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award (nation’s top defender) and Jim Thorpe Award (nation’s top defensive back) during his final college season. He led the country with 16 pass breakups and was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year by PFF.
