UPDATE: ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Seahawks are not signing Joe Mixon at 10:43 a.m. on Tuesday.

With their running back room down two key pieces, the Seattle Seahawks are expected to sign two-time Pro Bowler Joe Mixon to their practice squad.

Multiple NFL insiders reported Monday the Seahawks are expected to sign Mixon, and head coach Mike Macdonald later in the day confirmed Mixon worked out for the team earlier in the day and was going through the process of signing to the practice squad.

Mixon is coming to Seattle in search of a career revival after missing all of last season with a mysterious foot injury, and he’ll be looking to do so for a team that’s seen a mixed bag of results when it comes to its run game.

Report: Seahawks signing RB off Commanders’ practice squad

The Seahawks, who placed rookie running back Jadarian Price on injured reserve last week and are still awaiting the return to game action of Zach Charbonnet from a torn ACL, have rushed over 100 yards twice this season, including a season-high 162 yards in Week 2. They rank 13th in the league averaging 110.3 yards per game.

But in Week 3 against the Washington Commanders, they churned out just 44 yards on the ground, and Seattle running backs have accounted for only one run of more than 20 yards through the first four games, a 25-yarder by Price in Week 2. Without much explosiveness in the run game, the Seahawks are 19th in the league averaging 3.9 yards per carry.

The 30-year-old Mixon has rushed for 1,000 yards in five different seasons, and his 7,428 career rushing yards seventh among active running backs in the league.

“That dude is a full-grown man,” FOX color analyst and former NFL O-lineman Mark Schlereth told Seattle Sports’ Wyman and Bob on Monday. “I’m telling you, if healthy, Joe Mixon can play, and he’s a dude that does everything well – like a legit three-down back. He’ll run it, he’ll pass protect, he can catch it out of the backfield. I love Joe Mixon, I think he’s a great player.”

It’s unclear at this point exactly how quickly Mixon would be able to work his way into the Seahawks’ backfield mix, especially considering he hasn’t played a game since Jan. 18, 2025. But Schlereth is confident he can make an impact when he’s on the field.

“That, again, is one of those one of those spots where you bring him in, you put him on the practice squad, you elevate him and if he’s healthy, man, he’ll be ready to go,” Schlereth said. “And he provides some pop, he provides some toughness, he provides some of those nasty yards. So, that to me is a huge signing for Seattle. I think that’s a big-time move.”
