Instant observations from Seahawks’ preseason loss to Packers

The Seattle Seahawks wrapped up the preseason Saturday with a 20-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.

Here are some observations from the preseason finale.

All eyes were on Jalen Milroe as the Seahawks’ potential quarterback of the future took the reins of the offense for the entirety of the preseason finale. The end result was that the third-round pick looked the project he was expected to be coming out of Alabama.

Milroe wasn’t able to get the Seahawks offense going much and lost three fumbles, including twice in the first half to set up Green Bay scoring drives.

The rookie was able to lead Seattle on a quick five-play, 57-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, but that was about it for the highlights on the day.

There were times when Milroe’s running ability showed up as he scrambled to extend plays and pick up yards on the ground, but those moments were sporadic. The rookie didn’t appear to be getting much help from his receivers, either, as Seattle pass-catchers were well-covered for most of the game.

Milroe finished 13 of 24 for 148 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions, adding 31 yards on seven carries. He was sacked five times.

What would a Seahawks-Packers came without a little controversy?

On the opening drive of the game, third-year safety Ty Okada made spectacular interception on a ball deep down the middle from Green Bay quarterback Malik Willis, sprinting back and a hauling a diving one-handed catch into his body as he hit the ground. The Montana State product go up and added a 23-yard return.

Replay of the interception appeared to show the ground helping Okada make the play, but the call on the field stood for Seattle’s lone forced turnover on the day.

Okada, who is fighting for spot on the 53-man roster, added four tackles to round out a solid performance.

D’Anthony Bell, who is in the safety mix with Okada, also made an impact with three tackles and a sack.

Run game reverts

After rushing for 268 yards in a masterful effort against the Chiefs last week, Seattle’s offense didn’t find the same success running the ball against Green Bay.

The Seahawks’ final rushing line doesn’t look too bad. They averaged 5.4 yards with 130 yards on 24 carries. But 61 of those yards came one long run by Jacardia Wright, meaning they averaged just 3.0 yards on their remaining 23 carries.

The good news here is that the offense that was on the field Saturday isn’t the same one that will take the field Week 1 against San Francisco.

White makes strong final push

Cody White is among a handful of receivers in a fierce battle for final spots on the Seahawks’ roster. He appears to have helped himself out with an excellent finish to the preseason.

The Michigan State product almost single-handedly orchestrated Seattle’s only scoring drive. He showed he could help in the return game with a nifty 35-yard punt return, hauled in a 25-yard reception down the sideline on the next play and capped the drive with an 18-yard TD catch.

White finished with three catches for a team-high 69 yards. He had a chance add more when he got behind the secondary streaking down the middle late in the second quarter, but Milroe’s pass was just out of his reach.

Jake Bobo, who is among the receivers battling with White for a roster spot, suffered a concussion during the game, head coach Mike Macdonald said postgame. Depending on how long Bobo is out, White’s performance Saturday may have earned him a spot on the 53-man roster.

Ivey among defensive standouts

It was an overall strong day for Seattle’s defense, which allowed just 206 total yards.

Undrafted rookie outside linebacker Jared Ivey was among the standouts as he was all over the field with a team-high nine total tackles. The Ole Miss product also provided the pressure that led to a shared sack with UW product Alphonzo Tuputala’s on a fourth down in the fourth quarter. Ivey’s performance came after he briefly left the game early with an apparent knee injury.

Speaking of Tuputala, the former Husky took advantage of the playing time he received late, racking up five tackles to go along with his half sack. Connor O’Toole, another undrafted rookie linebacker, had a strong day of his own with six tackles.
