Lock, JSN connect for one of the longest passes in Seahawks history

Backup quarterback Drew Lock’s first throw of the game resulted in one of the longest touchdown passes in Seattle Seahawks history.

A look at the past 5 backup QBs to start for the Seahawks

On Seattle’s second snap against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, Lock connected with star wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba for an 82-yard touchdown pass to give the Seahawks an early 7-0 lead.

Smith-Njigba faked an out route to the sideline and then cut upfield, racing past cornerback Will Johnson and safety Budda Baker to give Lock a wide-open target. Lock hit Smith-Njigba in stride, and the NFL’s reigning receiving leader raced down the sideline for the longest reception of his career.

It was tied for the fourth-longest touchdown pass in franchise history and the fifth-longest pass overall, according to Stathead.

Interestingly, two of the three longest TD passes in Seahawks history also came from backup quarterbacks.

Backup Seneca Wallace threw a 90-yard TD pass to Koren Robinson against the Philadelphia Eagles in 2008, starter Matt Hasselbeck tossed an 87-yard TD pass to Ben Obomanu against the Kansas City Chiefs in 2010 and backup Geno Smith hit DK Metcalf for an 84-yard TD pass against the New Orleans Saints in 2021.

Trent Dilfer also threw an 83-yard pass to Koren Robinson against the St. Louis Rams in 2002, which is the longest non-scoring pass in franchise history.

Lock was starting in place of Sam Darnold, who suffered a glute injury on the opening series of Seattle’s Week 1 win over the New England Patriots.
