The UW Huskies men’s basketball team has a new radio play-by-play voice.

The school’s athletics department announced Tuesday that Nick Koop has been hired as UW’s director of broadcasting and radio play-by-play voice for the men’s basketball team.

“I’m thrilled for the opportunity to represent one of the richest traditions in college sports and one of the top universities in the world,” Koop said in a release. “Washington has been blessed with great radio voices, and I’m grateful to follow in their footsteps. I’m excited to work with Coach Sprinkle and the men’s basketball program and share stories from all across UW Athletics. Thank you to the school and Learfield for entrusting me with this position. I look forward to earning the trust of you, the fans, as well. My family and I can’t wait to get settled in Seattle and become entrenched within the UW community.”

Koop is replacing Tony Castricone on the call for UW men’s hoops game. Castricone in June was hired to be the radio play-by-play voice of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Koop is a native of Roseville, Calif., and graduate of Boston University. He has called football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and various other sports for UCLA since 2016. He also does play-by-play work for the Big Ten Network and FOX Sports, and he previously worked for the Pac-12 Network.

Koop began his broadcasting career at Harvard on the Ivy League Network and NESN. He also has experience as a studio host and national radio news anchor.

Koop will be on the call for his first Huskies game when UW takes on the rival WSU Cougars in an exhibition contest Sunday, Oct. 25, in Seattle.
