Three Mariners receive MVP votes

More recognition for Mariners came in Thursday afternoon as three popped up on the MVP final results. Robinson Cano finished fifth in the voting after an adjustment that bumped him up a position. Felix Hernandez finished 10th overall and Kyle Seager received one 10th-place vote, which put him on the board at 20th.

For Cano, it was the sixth time in his career he received MVP votes and the second straight year he finished fifth. His highest finish came in 2010, when he came in third behind Miguel Cabrera and the winner, Josh Hamilton.

Hernandez finished one spot ahead of Corey Kluber in the MVP voting, and interestingly enough, two of the voters – David Brown of Yahoo Sports and Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star Telegram – put him right behind Mike Trout, who was the unanimous winner. Kluber’s highest placement was third and that came from Brown as well. Neither Cleveland voter (the award is voted on by two BBWAA members from each chapter) had Kluber in their top 10. Of the Seattle voters, Larry Stone of The Seattle Times did not have Hernandez on his ballot, while Bob Dutton of The News Tribune had him finishing fourth. It was by far Hernandez’s best finish as he came in 26th in 2009, 16th in 2010 when he won the Cy Young and 22nd in both 2012 and 2013.

Others who voted for Mariners included Paul White of USA Today, who gave Seager his one vote, and Tim Kurkjian of ESPN, who had Cano second for the award. Cano was on all of the American League West writers’ ballots except for that of Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News.
