Mariners’ Colt Emerson to 10-day IL instead of Tacoma; Brock Rodden to debut

The Seattle Mariners placed Colt Emerson on the 10-day injured list with left wrist tendon inflammation Friday instead of optioning the struggling but prized rookie shortstop to the minor leagues.

As expected, rookie infielder Brock Rodden has been selected from the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers to take the open spot on the 26-man active roster. He will make his MLB debut Friday night in Houston, as he is in the lineup playing shortstop and hitting ninth.

It was reported after the Mariners’ 1-0 win over the Yankees in New York on Thursday that Emerson had been informed that he was being optioned to Tacoma, but the team has changed course. The 21 year old missed some time in April while still with the Rainiers due to a wrist injury. He also has missed a few games throughout his Mariners tenure with back issues.

In 68 games since being called up by the Mariners in mid-May, Emerson slashed just .190/.246/.335 for a .581 OPS with eight home runs and 83 strikeouts to 15 walks. The strikeouts have turned into a concern, as 34.4% of his plate appearances with Seattle ended in a punchout, nearly twice the 18.8% rate he’s had over his career in the minor leagues.

A first-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft out of high school in Ohio, Emerson was the Mariners’ top prospect for much of his time in the farm system. The lefty-swinging infielder had a strong start after joining the Mariners, hitting .271 with three home runs and a .935 OPS in his first 15 games. Emerson initially played third base after his promotion but returned to his natural position of shortstop in mid-June when longtime Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford switched places with him.

Rodden, 26, has hit .262 with 19 home runs and an .841 OPS in 92 games for Tacoma this year. A switch-hitter, he has split his time between short, third base and second base this season, plus appeared in the outfield. The Mariners picked the 5-foot-7, 170-pound Rodden in the fifth round of the 2023 draft out of Wichita State. He is the Mariners’ No. 19 prospect as ranked by MLB Pipeline and No. 18 by Baseball America.

In addition to Rodden, the Mariners have switch-hitting utility man Leo Rivas as an option for playing time at shortstop. Starting second baseman Cole Young and veteran utility man Brendan Donovan, who has mainly played third base this year, also have experience playing short. Crawford is currently on the IL with left wrist inflammation of his own.

The Mariners (57-65) start a critical three-game series against the AL West-leading Astros (62-60) at 5:10 p.m. Friday.
