Mariners Notebook: See the first lineup of spring training

With the beginning of Cactus League play Friday, the race begins to get the Seattle Mariners’ World Baseball Classic players ready to leave in a week. As such, early games should have a different look with veterans staying in games longer.

How Mariners’ reunion with Mitch Garver came together

“I think our priority right now is to get these guys the at-bats they need to be ready to leave here in a week if they’re in that spot,” Mariners manager Dan Wilson said Friday morning. “As we start moving forward, I think communication becomes big and seeing where these guys are at and how they’re feeling and how they respond the next day, and all that becomes super important going forward.”

For those who are not the immediate priority, namely the young players we have heard will get spring training opportunities while the WBC participants are away, there is a plan for them, too. The Mariners will have live at-bats on the back fields to get them and a number of pitchers the work they need.

As for the first lineup? Well, what do you know – a couple of the young players are indeed in there.

Mariners Radio Network coverage Friday begins at noon on Seattle Sports 710 AM and the Seattle Sports app, with first pitch from Peoria against the Padres at 12:10 p.m.

Notes

• The Mariners had a meeting before Friday’s game to go over the automated ball-strike (ABS) challenge system, which will be introduced into regular season games this year. Their plan is to get a feel for it in the early games and go from there. In other words, there are no hard and fast rules for usage on the club as of yet, although Wilson admitted they might discourage pitchers from challenging as they are the furthest away from call.
