In one of their final Cactus League games of the spring, the Seattle Mariners were dealt an injury scare to one of their top hitters.

Mariners right fielder Victor Robles got hit by a pitch in Saturday’s matchup against the Chicago White Sox, taking an 87.2 mph slider from reliever Gus Varland off his right hand. Robles immediately jumped up and down while shaking his hand in visible pain. He then was briefly evaluated by head athletic trainer Kyle Torgerson before exiting the game and heading to the clubhouse.

After the game, Mariners manager Dan Wilson was optimistic that Robles would be OK.

“They’re gonna get it checked out today and hopefully he’s in good shape,” Wilson said. “… It’s never a good time for something like that, but I think he’s going to be OK.

“Guys need to get their work in here and we’re right toward the end, (so) you don’t want to see anybody get hurt at this point,” he added. “But I think Vic’s gonna be fine.”

Robles, 27, is coming off a breakout season that resurrected his career.

After being released by the Washington Nationals early last season, Robles signed with the Mariners last June and was an immediate revelation. The former top prospect hit .328/.393/.467 in 77 games with Seattle, while totaling four home runs, 20 doubles, 30 stolen bases, an .860 OPS and a 155 OPS+. It earned him a two-year contract extension last August, which solidified him as a big part of the club’s plans going forward.

Robles has continued his strong play this spring, hitting .283 with three home runs, two doubles and an .836 OPS in 53 at-bats. Saturday marked the third time this spring that he’s been hit by a pitch.

The Mariners have two more Cactus League games remaining before they head back to Seattle. They open their 2025 season next Thursday against the Athletics at T-Mobile Park.
