Mariners’ Ryan Bliss suffers season-ending injury on rehab assignment

Rehabbing second baseman Ryan Bliss has a new injury and will not be returning to the Seattle Mariners this season.

Bliss, who began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma on Aug. 28 as he worked his way back from a torn left biceps, will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn meniscus in his right knee, per MLB.com’s Josh Kirshenbaum.

Mariners general manager Justin Hollander shared the news to reporters before the Mariners’ series opener Monday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Bliss, 25, last played in a game for the M’s on April 8. He showed promise as Seattle’s starting second baseman to begin the season, as he was running a six-game hitting streak during which he slashed .300/.333/.500 for an .833 OPS prior to his biceps injury. On the year, he hit 7 for 35 (.200) with a double, a homer, four walks and two stolen bases for Seattle.

On his rehab assignment, Bliss was 5 for 13 (.385) with a 1.115 OPS, three doubles, seven RBIs, four walks, and two steals on five attempts in six games. He last appeared in a game for the Rainiers on Friday in Tacoma against the Reno Aces.

The Mariners picked up Bliss in a 2023 trade with the Diamondbacks, and he made his MLB debut in 2024, slashing .222/.290/.397 for a .687 OPS with two homers and five steals in 33 games for the M’s.

Bliss was a second-round MLB Draft pick by Arizona in 2021 out of Auburn.

The Mariners have primarily used rookie Cole Young at second base this season. Jorge Polanco, who is Seattle’s usual designated hitter, also sees time at second, and fellow switch-hitter Leo Rivas has been seeing action at the position since he was recalled when active MLB rosters expanded from 26 players to 28 at the beginning of September.

Entering Monday, the Mariners (75-68) led the Texas Rangers (74-70) by 1 1/2 games for the American League’s third and final wild card with 19 games left to play. Seattle is also just 2 1/2 games back of the Houston Astros (78-66) for first place in the AL West.

The Mariners open their series against the Cardinals with a 6:40 p.m. first pitch Monday night. Radio coverage on Seattle Sports will begin at 5:30 with the pregame show.
