Mariners prospect on cusp of big leagues wins player of the week

Of the many Seattle Mariners’ prospects ranked in the top 100 by publications like MLB.com and Baseball America, the one with the best chance of debuting this season was clear.

Cole Young, Seattle’s first-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, not only is one of the most prized players in the Mariners farm system, but he’s a middle infielder – and if there’s one position where the M’s aren’t all that settled, it’s second base.

The 21-year-old Pittsburgh native started the year by debuting at the Triple-A level with the Tacoma Rainiers, with hopes that he could make the jump to the bigs soon, but it was a rough going at first.

It’s not anymore.

On Monday, Young was named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week for May 5-11. Over that stretch, Young went 10 for 22 (.455) at the plate with a home run, a triple, three doubles, eight runs, four RBIs, a stolen base, and three walks to just two strikeouts.

Young’s been hot for longer than that, though. He enters Monday with an eight-game hitting streak, over which he’s 14 for 30 (.467) with two homers, four doubles, and four walks to three strikeouts.

The honor for Young comes just a week after three players in the M’s system won player of the week awards: Dominic Canzone (Triple-A PCL, Tacoma), Victor Labrada (Double-A Texas League, Arkansas Travelers) and Lazaro Montes (High-A Northwest League, Everett AquaSox). On the year, Mariners minor league players have won a total of seven league player of the week awards.

In new MLB.com prospect rankings released Sunday, Young is ranked 43rd overall and third in the M’s system.

In 38 games with the Rainiers this season, Young has a .236/.439/.368 slash for a .717 OPS with two homers. He has played 24 games at second base and 15 (14 starts) at shortstop.
