AFL update
The Mariners sent eight players to play for the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League. It’s been a rather quiet showing from the group through the first half of the 30-game schedule.
The biggest name the M’s sent to Arizona was catcher Boston Smith, the club’s 13th-ranked prospect. The 23-year-old Smith, who was acquired from the White Sox in August during the Luis Castillo trade, is batting just .156 (5 for 32) with a .473 OPS, no extra-base hits, eights walks and 14 strikeouts in 10 games.
Brandon Eike, a 25 year old who put together a strong season with High-A Everett this year, is also hitting just .229 (8 for 35) with a .594 OPS, two doubles, four walks and nine strikeouts in 10 games.
Among the five pitchers Seattle sent to the AFL, right-handers Ty Cummings and Adam Smith are having the best showings thus far. Cummings, a 24 year old, has allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six batters over 4 2/3 innings in five appearances. Smith, a 26 year old, has surrendered one run on two hits while striking out four over 3 2/3 innings over four appearances.
While the Mariners’ prospects in the AFL haven’t made much noise, one player that has for the Javelinas is former M’s prospect Tai Peete. The 21-year-old Peete is batting .341 (14 for 41) with a 1.060 OPS, one homer, three doubles, three triples, six walks and 12 strikeouts in 10 game. Peete was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in February in the deal that brought Brendan Donovan to Seattle.
Peoria sits in fourth place in the six-team AFL with an 8-7 record through the first half of the schedule. The league wraps up its regular season Wednesday, Nov. 11, and holds its playoffs from Nov. 12-14.
