Mariners put Matt Brash on IL again amid flurry of 5 roster moves

For the second time in a month, the Seattle Mariners have put right-handed relief pitcher Matt Brash on the 15-day injured list.

The 28-year-old Brash was put on the IL with a right lat strain Wednesday, a slightly worse designation than last month when he went on the IL with right lat inflammation.

The roster move with Brash was one of five Seattle made in a flurry ahead of Wednesday’s 3:35 p.m. game in Baltimore. The full list of moves is:

• Pitcher Matt Brash placed on the 15-day IL (right lat inflammation, retroactive to June 9)
• Pitcher Domingo González recalled from Triple-A Tacoma
• Infielder/outfielder Miles Mastrobuoni reinstated from the 60-day IL (right call strain)
• Infielder Ryan Bliss optioned to Triple-A Tacoma
• Pitcher Yosver Zulueta designated for assignment

Brash struggled with his command in his last outing on Monday, throwing just eight of his 18 pitches for strikes while hitting one batter, walking another and recording a strikeout in 2/3 innings of work. He had not been as sharp since his return from the IL in mid-May as he was over the first month of the season when he allowed no earned runs over 12 appearances (9 1/3 innings).

On the season, Brash has a 0.54 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 15 strikeouts over 16 2/3 innings in 20 appearances.

Passan: Kade Anderson dominating minors at rare level

The 26-year-old González has appeared in four games this season for Seattle, allowing no runs on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. He has spent most of the season with Triple-A Tacoma, where he has posted a 1.66 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 19 strikeouts over 21 2/3 innings in 18 relief outings.

The activation of Mastrobuoni comes after he spent a full rehab assignment with Tacoma over the past month and joined Seattle’s taxi squad Tuesday a day after shortstop J.P. Crawford went on the 10-day injured list with a right hand contusion and rookie Colt Emerson, the Mariners’ next option at short, was scratched from the lineup due to back tightness. Emerson did not play Tuesday and remains out of the starting lineup Wednesday.

The 30-year-old Mastrobuoni began the season on the injured list after suffering a calf strain playing for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic in March. In 14 games with Tacoma this season, the left-handed swinger has gone 8 for 43 (.186) with a home run, two doubles and a triple. He slashed .250/.324/.296 for a .620 OPS with one home run and four doubles in 76 games for the Mariners in 2025, and has played all infield positions plus right field and left field in his MLB career.

Mastrobuoni is starting at second base and hitting eighth in his season debut for Seattle on Wednesday.

Bliss, 26, was called up from Triple-A to take Crawford’s roster spot Monday. He is 1 for 8 (.125) with a walk and an RBI for the Mariners this season. He has exclusively played second base in the big leagues, but has also seen time at third base, shortstop and left field in the minors.

The 28-year-old Zulueta was acquired by the Mariners in January in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds. He has made 19 career MLB appearances, all with the Reds over the previous two seasons, and has a 5.75 ERA and 1.770 WHIP in 20 1/3 innings with Tacoma this year.
