J.P. Crawford scratched from Mariners lineup, but working out at 3B

The Seattle Mariners’ lineup has a bit of a different look on Wednesday after shortstop J.P. Crawford was a late scratch.

Mariners insider Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports reported Crawford was pulled due to soreness stemming from being hit by a pitch on Sunday.

Crawford exited the game Sunday against San Diego with a triceps contusion after being hit by a pitch, and was hit by another pitch that just missed his arm Monday night against Chicago. He was held out of the lineup Tuesday night before making a pinch-hit appearance in the ninth inning.

After the new lineup was announced Wednesday, Drayer reported Crawford was on the field participating in drills at third base. He played 26 games combined at the hot corner in 2017 and 2018 with the Philadelphia Phillies.

With Crawford out of the lineup, second baseman Cole Young moved up to the leadoff spot. This will be the first time Young has hit leadoff as a big leaguer. The 22 year old is batting .240 with a .665 OPS while appearing in all 50 games for the M’s this season.

Rookie Colt Emerson, who is hitting eighth, slides over from third base to shortstop to fill in for Crawford. Emerson, the top-ranked prospect in the Mariners’ farm system, played his first MLB game at shortstop Tuesday night.

Patrick Wisdom was inserted into the lineup in place of Crawford. He will play third base and bat seventh.

Right-hander Emerson Hancock (3-2, 3.02 ERA) is set to take the mound for Seattle against White Sox right-hander Sean Burke (2-3, 4.10) in the rubber of match of the three-game series.

First pitch of Wednesday’s Mariners-White Sox game is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. Radio Coverage on Seattle Sports 710 AM and the Seattle Sports app begins with the pregame show at noon.
