Mariners make first of what will be multiple roster moves

The Seattle Mariners have started what could be a series of roster moves before they begin a six-game homestand.

On late Monday morning, the Mariners announced the following moves:

• Infielder Patrick Wisdom optioned to Triple-A Tacoma (post-game Sunday)
• Relief pitcher Domingo González cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma

The move with Wisdom opens a spot on the 26-man active roster.

The Mariners also announced earlier Monday that they traded right-handed pitcher Yosver Zulueta to the Chicago Cubs for cash considerations. Zulueta, who Seattle picked up in a minor trade from Cincinnati in January, has spent this season in Triple-A and was designated for assignment last Wednesday.

The Mariners, who were already pretty banged up when they started a 10-day road trip on June 5, only got more banged up over the subsequent 10 games.

Shortstop J.P. Crawford landed on the 10-day injured list with a right hand contusion, reliever Matt Brash went back on the 15-day IL with a right lat strain, and reliever Cooper Criswell went on the 15-day IL with a right shoulder strain during the trip. Additionally, All-Star left fielder Randy Arozarena (hamstring), All-Star first baseman Josh Naylor (shin) and All-Star closer Andrés Muñoz (back) all left games in Washington, D.C., over the weekend with injury concerns.

Standout rookie shortstop/third baseman Colt Emerson also missed three games during the trip with a back issue but return to play last Thursday.

Crawford is likely to be activated from the IL on Tuesday, as is superstar catcher Cal Raleigh, who has hit five home runs in five minor league games while on a rehab stint. Raleigh has been on the 10-day IL since mid-May due to an oblique strain.

The Mariners designated the 26-year-old González for assignment last Thursday and called up local product Michael Rucker, another right-handed reliever, to take his place in the bullpen. González made his MLB debut with Seattle on May 12. In five games for the M’s, he has a 4.70 ERA with four runs allowed over 7 2/3 innings.

The 34-year-old Wisdom has hit .122 (5 for 41) with a home run, a double and 18 strikeouts to three walks in 15 games with the Mariners this year. A three-time 20-homer hitter for the Chicago Cubs from 2021-23, Wisdom is tied for sixth in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League with 12 home runs despite having played in just 23 of the Tacoma’s 69 games this year.

The M’s (37-36 record) enter Monday with a one-game lead in the AL West. They will open their homestand against the Baltimore Orioles at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday, with Mariners Radio Network coverage on Seattle Sports beginning at 5:30 with the pregame show.
