Mariners-Tigers Series Preview: Weather, Game 1 lineup and more

The Seattle Mariners are set to take on the Detroit Tigers for the first time since taking them down in five games in the 2025 American League Division Series.

One thing is very different from last fall, which is that while the Mariners are on top of the AL West once again, the Tigers are 5 1/2 games out of a playoff spot over two months into the season.

One thing that continues to be the case as usual when the M’s go to Detroit, though, is that weather is a concern for the three-game series at the Tigers’ roofless Comerica Park.

There are thunderstorms in the forecast for the afternoon and later Friday, per AccuWeather, though there is optimism that won’t result in any delays for the opener set for a 3:40 p.m. Pacific first pitch.

Saturday’s 10:10 a.m. game, however, could run into complications. AccuWeather’s forecast predicts “variable cloudiness with a thunderstorm in parts of the area.”

When the Mariners and Tigers are playing, expect the ball to be jumping off of bats. The high temperature for each of Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Detroit is expected to be in the low to mid 80s.

Game 3 of the ALDS at Comerica Park was delayed almost three hours last October due to rain.

Here are a few other things to know going into the Mariners’ series in Detroit.

Injuries

The Tigers are one of the more beat-up teams in baseball right now. They could get two-time reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal back soon following early-season surgery to remove loose bodies in his elbow, but it won’t be during the series against Seattle.

Detoit’s long-term 60-day injured list includes outfielder Parker Meadows, shortstop Trey Sweeney, starting pitchers Reese Olsen, Jackson Jobe and Justin Verlander, and relievers Bailey Horn and Brant Hurter. Shortstop Javier Báez is on the 10-day IL, and the 15-day pitcher IL has closer Kenley Jansen, starter Casey Mize and reliever Burch Smith on it in addition Skubal.

The Mariners are in much better shape on the injury front, and getting healthier. All-Star catcher Cal Raleigh will start a rehab assignment Sunday with the High-A Everett AquaSox on Sunday as he looks to return from an oblique strain. Third baseman Will Wilson (fractured thumb) is also beginning a rehab stint with Everett on Friday, and veteran utility man Miles Mastrobuoni (calf strain) is currently on a rehab assignment with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainers.

There is no timetable known yet for when third baseman Brendan Donovan, who is on the 10-day IL with a groin strain, could return.
